As part of a June 17, 2008 press conference held at Rogers Centre, Bills Toronto Series organizers announced a sponsorship that will see the province’s finest high school football teams to return to Rogers Centre to play their championship games.

The OFSAA Football Bowl Championships will now be called the OFSAA Bills Toronto Series Football Bowls. As part of the partnership all high school teams participating in the Bowls will also wear Bills Toronto Series jersey patches.

For several years the Metro Bowl, Golden Horseshoe Bowl, Western Bowl, Northern Bowl and National Capital Bowl – together comprising the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) boy’s football championships – were played at Rogers Centre. The championships were paired with CIS Vanier Cup festivities.

On December 3, 2008, the Bills Toronto Series will be creating an outstanding championship environment for Ontario’s most important high school football games.

“The Bills Toronto Series has given high school football in Ontario – and the grassroots football community as a whole – a real boost with today’s announcement,” said Mike Thorpe, OFSAA. “Playing in the Rogers Centre gives young football players an incredible championship experience to work towards, and takes late fall’s inclement weather out of the equation for us as organizers. We are very appreciative of this generous donation.”

The Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletics (OFSAA) has organized high school football and a football championship event on a province-wide level since 1999.

The OFSAA Football Bowl Championship Series now includes five regional championship games: the Metro Bowl, Golden Horseshoe Bowl, Western Bowl, Northern Bowl and National Capital Bowl.

Often paired with CIS Vanier Cup festivities, the OFSAA Football Bowl Championship Series games were played on a single day at Rogers Centre from 2000-2003 and 2005-2006 (in 2004 the Vanier Cup and Series were held in Hamilton). In 2007 increasing costs associated with hosting the Series forced the games to be held in regional outdoor facilities.

This season the Bills Toronto Series is proud to welcome OFSAA football back to Rogers Centre. for more information, please visit www.ofsaa.on.ca

Q & A’s from John Allaire, the Bills Strength/Conditioning Coach

John Allaire
Buffalo Bills Strength and Conditioning Coach

Q: What is the most important thing for young football players to remember regarding strength and conditioning?
A: Young players must be patient. It takes a lot of time, effort, and hard work to become strong and to reach a high level of physical conditioning. When strength training, remember to work your technique and become sound with your exercise movements before you start adding the weight. It is very easy to get hurt performing exercises incorrectly or with too much weight being lifted. The same can be said about conditioning…doing too much, too soon, too fast can lead to injury and burn out. Be patient, work hard, and you will see results over time. Safety first!

Q: What are some important exercises for young players?
A: I would start with building a solid foundation with core training exercises. A strong core will in turn give you a solid platform to start working your extremities (upper body parts, lower body parts). Another important point to remember when choosing exercises for your strength training program is to choose exercises that will help with symmetry and balance. Meaning, if you choose exercises to develop your chest, you must also choose exercises to develop your back (anterior, posterior). Keeping your body in balance will give you the proper biomechanics to perform at a high level and may reduce the risk of future injuries.

Q: What is your philosophy on nutrition?
A: All athletes must start with a well balanced diet. A well balanced diet will give your body the potential to work at an optimal level. Nutritional guidelines vary from athlete to athlete and guidelines vary for different times of the year (off-season vs. in-season). An off-season diet is a little higher in protein as we are trying to gain mass, power, and strength (training for football). The In-season diet is a little higher in carbohydrates due to the need for stored muscle glycogen (your muscle’s fuel) to perform at a high level over time (3-3.5 hour game). Diets need to be tweaked to fit individual needs and goals, but the guidelines below will give you a good starting point.

Off-season Nutrition Guidelines
  • 45% of calories from carbohydrates
  • 35% of calories form protein
  • Remainder of calories from fat

In-season Nutrition Guidelines
  • 55-65% of calories from carbohydrates
  • 25% of calories form protein
  • Remainder of calories from fat
